Unearth the Sacred Treasures of the Monastery Museum: A Journey Through Time and Faith

In the heart of Bosnia and Herzegovina lies a sanctuary of sacred art and profound history – the Monastery Museum, inaugurated in 2019. This museum boasts one of the most significant collections of icons in the country, each piece narrating tales of devotion and divine craftsmanship.

The icons within the museum's halls are not limited to a single origin. They showcase the artistic prowess of Serbian, Greek (from the famed Italo-Cretan school), and Russian painters. Amongst these sacred masterpieces, one stands out, capturing the awe of every visitor – the revered icon "Umiljenje". This divine piece, one of only four of its kind globally, is believed to be the handiwork of the medieval artist Andrej Ricos.

The crown jewel of the museum is undoubtedly the original monastery iconostasis from the 17th century, with the imperial doors painted in 1676 by the illustrious artist Radul. This awe-inspiring artifact stands as a testament to the rich religious history and artistry of the region.

Yet, the museum's repertoire extends beyond these magnificent icons. The oldest artifact in its possession is a handwritten book from the 14th century, known as the "Minej". Beyond this, the museum also conserves an impressive collection of church artifacts, fashioned from silver and bronze, and fragments of priestly vestments that have graced sacred ceremonies over the centuries.

For those with a penchant for history, art, or spirituality, the Monastery Museum offers a unique journey. Dive deep into the spiritual heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and witness firsthand the intricate artistry and dedication that has been preserved across generations. Come, let the echoes of time and tales of devotion beckon you to the Monastery Museum. Your soul will thank you for it.

Discover the Resilience and Beauty of the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Mostar

Nestled alongside the serene Radobolja River and under the shadow of the Hum mountain lies a testament to Mostar's unwavering spirit and deep-seated faith: the Church of St. Peter and Paul. This Roman Catholic edifice, coupled with its accompanying Franciscan monastery, stands as a beacon of hope, a symbol of rebirth, and an ode to the city's resilience.

Built originally in 1866, this majestic structure was governed by the Franciscan friars. Roughly thirty years after the church's inauguration, the adjoining Franciscan monastery graced the city's skyline. However, the serenity of this sacred space was disrupted in 1992 when it faced destruction from the Serbian-Montenegrin bombardment of Mostar. The once-majestic church was left in ruins post-war, its remnants further battered by fire and shells. Yet, in the face of adversity, the spirit of Mostar and its faithful denizens shone through.

With fervor and unmatched dedication, within a mere 35 days, the friars constructed a vast crypt, accommodating 1,200 seats, and by Christmas 1995, the Midnight Mass echoed in its new embrace. The church's rebirth didn't stop there. The subsequent reconstruction took inspiration from the original church, replicating its grandeur, albeit on a larger and more robust scale. By 2009/2010, the exterior of the Franciscan Monastery was also meticulously restored to its former glory.

History intertwines with the present in this sacred space. Relics from the original church, spared by fire and bombardment, are now proudly displayed in the gallery of the Franciscan monastery. Adding to the splendor is the Mostar Peace Bell Tower, soaring at 107 meters, making it the tallest in the region. Erected on the site of the original bell tower from 1866, it houses five preserved bells from 1927 and two newer ones from 2015. Inside, visitors can immerse themselves in texts and photographs depicting the cultural and historical sites pivotal to Mostar and its surroundings.

For those who seek an unparalleled panoramic view of Mostar's breathtaking beauty, the vantage point from the Mostar Peace Bell Tower offers an experience like no other.

Embark on a journey to Mostar and let the Church of St. Peter and Paul and its tales of hope, faith, and resilience resonate with you. Every brick and stone speaks of a city's indomitable spirit, waiting for you to listen.

The Artistic Legacy of Mostar: A Journey Through Time and Culture

Nestled in the heart of Mostar lies an emblem of art and faith: the Art Gallery of the Mostar-Duvno and Trebinje-Mrkan Dioceses. Founded in 1989 through the decree of Bishop Mons. Pavao Žanić, it was initially named the "Gallery of Friendship". Conceived with the mission of promoting modern art and safeguarding the Church's cultural heritage in Herzegovina, this gallery reflects the rich tapestry of art and faith intertwined throughout the ages.

Though officially established in the late 1980s, the seeds of artistic appreciation were sown much earlier. As early as the 1930s, the celebrated painter Karlo Afan de Rivera (1885-1979) immortalized the portraits of the Mostar-Duvno bishops and apostolic vicars.

As time passed, the gallery's collection grew richer and more diverse, incorporating meticulously chosen masterpieces from the 20th century, making it one of the most esteemed art collections in this part of Europe.

Acknowledging the Catholic Church's pivotal role in the development of cultural and educational thought throughout history, the diocesan administration, in 1990, took the monumental decision to construct the Diocesan Center in Mostar. Today, the heart of this center is the art gallery itself. Designed by renowned architect Zlatko Ugljen, the center took shape during the episcopal service of Mons. Ratko Perić. By 2023, under the guidance of Mons. Petar Palić, the center, with its art gallery, opened its doors to both local and international audiences, culminating in a narrative almost a century in the making.

Today, the gallery's collection showcases contemporary art pieces, painstakingly gathered over half a century by Herzegovinian priest Dr. Vjeko Božo Jarak, primarily through collaborations with artists and professors from the Sarajevo and Zagreb academies. In addition to modern masterpieces, the gallery boasts archaeological artifacts, an impressive collection of icons, liturgical clothing, vessels, and ancient liturgical books.

For art enthusiasts and curious souls alike, a more in-depth exploration awaits on their official Facebook page.

So, take a step back in time and embrace the rich heritage and artistic brilliance of Mostar at this iconic gallery. Each artifact tells a story of faith, culture, and the enduring spirit of a community that has cherished art for generations.
